Sattu

Long before protein shakes came along, sattu was what farmers, travellers and pehelwans lived on. It is still one of the best protein foods you can keep in an Indian kitchen, and it costs a fraction of what a protein powder does.

Our Chana Sattu is made from 100% roasted chana (Bengal gram). The chana comes from the village, is roasted properly and ground fresh on a traditional stone chakki. When you open the pack, you will get that nutty, roasted smell that factory-made sattu usually misses.

Sattu is a good source of natural plant protein and fibre, it keeps you full for hours and needs no cooking at all. That is why it works in every season.

In summer, stir two tablespoons of sattu into a glass of cold water, add black salt, roasted jeera powder and a squeeze of lemon. That is a proper sattu sharbat. It is cool, filling and ready in a minute, and many families drink it in the morning instead of tea. If you like it sweet, use gur or sugar instead of salt.

In winter, use it the other way. Make sattu paratha with chopped onion, green chilli, ajwain and a few drops of mustard oil. Roll it into laddoos with desi ghee and gur. Or cook it into a warm porridge with milk. It is also the heart of litti chokha, the famous Bihari dish.

If you work out, add a spoon to your milk or smoothie after training. If you are a student or an office-goer, a glass of sattu in the morning makes a quick breakfast on days when there is no time to cook.
